Potential Side Effects of Metformin 850 mg BID

Metformin, while generally well-tolerated, can cause side effects. Gastrointestinal issues are common, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal bloating. These usually lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. Drink plenty of water with each dose to help minimize these effects. If GI upset is severe, contact your doctor.

Less frequent, but still possible, side effects include a metallic taste in your mouth, a vitamin B12 deficiency (requiring monitoring), and lactic acidosis–a rare but serious condition. Lactic acidosis is more likely in individuals with kidney problems or liver disease. Regular blood tests help your doctor monitor for this.

Some individuals experience a decrease in appetite or weight loss. If significant weight loss occurs, inform your doctor. Skin reactions, such as rash, are also possible. Stop taking metformin and seek medical attention if you develop a severe rash or other allergic reaction.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is uncommon with metformin alone, but may be more likely if you combine it with other diabetes medications or don’t consume enough carbohydrates. Learn to recognize hypoglycemia symptoms (dizziness, sweating, shakiness) and treat appropriately.

Your doctor can address any concerns and adjust your dosage or treatment plan if necessary. Regular check-ups are recommended for optimal management of your health and medication.
