Spectrum of Activity: Which Bacteria are Affected?

Lincomycins primarily target Gram-positive bacteria. Clindamycin, a lincomycin derivative, shows broader activity against certain Gram-negative anaerobes.

Gram-positive bacteria susceptible to lincomycins include Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains, although resistance is increasing), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and various streptococcal species. However, resistance is a growing concern, and susceptibility testing is crucial before treatment.

Clostridium difficile, a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium responsible for antibiotic-associated colitis, is also susceptible. Clindamycin’s use is, however, carefully considered because it can trigger C. difficile infection.
