Potential Side Effects and Precautions

Doxycycline, like all medications, can cause side effects. While many experience no issues, be aware of potential problems. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. These usually are mild and resolve without treatment. However, severe diarrhea might signal a serious infection (Clostridium difficile), requiring immediate medical attention.

Sun sensitivity is another concern. Doxycycline increases your skin’s vulnerability to sunburn. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, seek shade during peak sun hours, and cover exposed skin. A sunburn might appear more severe than usual.

Yeast infections (candidiasis) are also possible, particularly in women. This manifests as vaginal itching or discharge. Contact your doctor if this occurs.

Less common but more serious side effects include:

Side Effect Symptoms Action
Increased pressure in the skull (pseudotumor cerebri) Severe headache, vision changes, nausea, vomiting Seek immediate medical help.
Esophageal irritation Pain when swallowing Take doxycycline with plenty of water and while upright.
Photosensitivity Severe sunburn, rash Avoid sun exposure; use high SPF sunscreen.
Liver damage Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, abdominal pain Stop taking doxycycline and contact your doctor immediately.

Before starting doxycycline, inform your doctor about all current medications, allergies (especially to tetracyclines), and existing medical conditions, especially pregnancy, breastfeeding, or kidney/liver problems. Do not take doxycycline if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it. This antibiotic might affect tooth development in young children, so it’s generally avoided in those under eight years old.
