Monitoring Ovulation and Follicular Growth

Schedule regular transvaginal ultrasounds to track follicle growth. Ideally, begin these scans around cycle day 8-10, adjusting based on your individual cycle length. Your doctor will measure the dominant follicle’s size.

Expect follicle growth of approximately 2-3 millimeters per day. A follicle typically reaches 18-24 millimeters before ovulation.

Blood tests measuring serum estradiol levels provide supplementary information. Rising estradiol correlates with follicle maturation. Your physician will interpret these results in conjunction with ultrasound findings.

Monitor basal body temperature (BBT). A sustained increase in BBT by at least 0.4°F (0.2°C) suggests ovulation has occurred. Record your BBT daily using a basal thermometer.

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that precedes ovulation. Positive OPK results indicate impending ovulation within 24-48 hours.

Combine these methods for the most reliable ovulation confirmation. Discuss the best monitoring strategy with your doctor, considering your individual circumstances and treatment goals.
