Keflex Dosage for Children and Special Considerations

Always consult your pediatrician before administering Keflex to a child. Dosage is determined by weight and the severity of the infection. A common dosage is 25-50 mg per kilogram of body weight, divided into two or four doses daily. For example, a 20 kg child might receive 500 mg twice daily. The medication is usually given for 7-14 days.

Adjusting Dosage Based on Kidney Function

Children with kidney problems require adjusted dosages. Your doctor will calculate the correct dose based on the child’s creatinine clearance. Never adjust the dosage yourself; always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Allergic Reactions and Precautions

Penicillin allergy is a contraindication. Monitor your child for allergic reactions such as rash, hives, or swelling. If any of these occur, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor. Keflex might cause diarrhea; in severe cases, it could indicate *Clostridium difficile* infection. Inform your doctor if this happens.
