Doxycycline can interact negatively with several medications and some foods. Always inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you’re taking before starting doxycycline. This includes over-the-counter drugs. Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum significantly reduce doxycycline absorption; separate their intake by at least two hours. Dairy products, like milk and yogurt, have a similar effect; consume them outside of your doxycycline dosage window.
Medication Interactions
Certain medications, like warfarin (a blood thinner) and methotrexate (a chemotherapy drug), can have their effects altered when taken alongside doxycycline. Your doctor may need to adjust dosages or monitor you more closely. Birth control pills may become less effective; consider alternative contraceptive methods while using doxycycline. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for a complete list of potential interactions.
Food Interactions
Beyond dairy, iron supplements may interfere with doxycycline absorption. Take them at least two hours apart. While not as impactful as dairy or antacids, high-calcium foods may slightly diminish absorption; balance your diet carefully, but don’t unduly stress over occasional consumption.
