Administering Doxycycline Correctly to Your Dog

Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions precisely. Dosage varies depending on your dog’s weight and the specific condition being treated. Typically, doxycycline is given twice daily.

Offer the medication with food. This helps improve absorption and minimize stomach upset. Some dogs readily accept pills hidden in treats; others require more coaxing. If your dog refuses the pill, consult your vet for alternative administration methods.

Use a pill pocket or a small amount of peanut butter (xylitol-free!) to disguise the pill. Never force your dog to take medication. If your dog struggles, contact your veterinarian for advice on administration techniques.

Store doxycycline in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.

Monitor your dog for any adverse reactions, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. Report any unusual symptoms to your veterinarian immediately. Complete the full course of treatment, even if your dog seems better, to ensure effective heartworm prevention and treatment.

Regularly check your dog for signs of heartworm infection, and continue heartworm preventative medication as prescribed by your vet. This combined approach contributes to maintaining your dog’s health.
